Before your child officially starts at school, there are familiarisation days. These are introductory days on which your child can get used to the school, the teacher and the other children.
What are familiarisation days?
Familiarisation days are short visits to the school before your child really starts there. Usually there are 3 to 5 familiarisation days in the weeks before the first real school day. Each school gives shape to this in its own way.
Tips for a smooth start
- Talk positively at home about school and the teacher
- Let your child get acquainted with the school environment, for example by cycling or walking past it
- Make sure your child goes to school well-rested
- Give your child something familiar if that helps, such as a cuddly toy
- Do not make the first school days too long if your child needs it
The first day of school
On the first real school day you may bring your child to the class. The teacher will tell you how pick-up works and what the daily schedule is. Some schools organise a welcome moment for parents.
Questions?
Contact the school where your child is enrolled. They will tell you all about the familiarisation days and the first day of school.
